Is your hair getting thinner, dryer, and simply breaking off? Have you noticed your layers getting shorter? If so, your hair is desperately crying out for attention: it's simply breaking. There are of course many contributors to breaking hair, and before you find a solution, you first must find WHY it's happening in the first place. But don't worry, you won't need to spend a ton of cash at a salon, I'll show you exactly how to fix breaking hair at home, with minimal products, safely, and successfully.
Fix Breaking Hair at Home Tutorial
Why Is My Hair Breaking?
There are many different reasons as to why your hair might be breaking. Maybe you fit one of these, or several, but whichever of these reasons applies to you, make sure that you try to stop it.
- You pull your hair. If you're a hair puller, chances are that you're contributing to your hair's breakage. Tugging, pulling, or twirling your hair, are big no nos as they have the same effect as yanking out your strands.
- You style wet. Brushing your hair while it's wet is one of the biggest hair faux-pas you can make. Because your strands are wet, brushing through them will only pull at the hairline, causing damage and breakage. Instead, try to detangle your hair while in the shower using only your fingertips. Then, use a wide tooth comb to remove the rest of the tangles. Wait for hair to dry before brushing through again.
- Your ponytail is too tight. A ponytail is a fast and easy option, but it can wreak havoc on your hair. A too tight pony will pull at your hairline, breaking off the strands. Instead, try a more relaxed ponytail or even a braid. Also, be wary of hair elastics that can damage your strands – some are better than others.
- Your iron too often. You already know that applying heat to your hair is damaging, but using a flat iron or a curling iron on your hair every single day is a horrible idea. If you find that your hair is literally at its breaking point, avoid heat at all costs. If you must though, make sure you use a heat protectant and turn DOWN the heat on your irons.
- You're over bleaching or over dyeing. We all want the latest and coolest colors, but unfortunately, your hair can only take so much. Give your hair a nice, long, break from color and/or bleach. The ombre look is in, so don't be afraid to just let it go au naturel. If you must dye or bleach though, make sure to use a deep conditioning treatment once a week.
- You're skipping haircuts. In order for your hair to be healthy, you need to get regular trims – but you already knew that! Unfortunately, not going in for the regular cut will only make your hair break off.
- You have the wrong pillowcase. If you wake up with wild tresses in the morning, it may be time to switch your pillowcase from a cotton one to a satin on. The friction from the cotton tangles the hair.
- Bad diet. As with everything, a poor diet can indeed affect the health of your hair. So make sure you're getting enough water, vitamins, and minerals. Most importantly though, your hair needs protein to stay strong!
- Stress. Stress can be a major cause of hair breakage so before you start panicking about things you can't even control, stop and think for a minute.
How to Fix It
- STOP THE HEAT . Give your hair a break from the blow drier, curling iron, or flat iron. Instead, let it air dry.
- BRING IN THE MOISTURE. Invest in a good hair mask and apply to your damaged strands once a week. A thick, moisturizing hair mask might be just what the doctor ordered!
- STOP THE COLORING. Whatever you do, do NOT dye or bleach your hair while it's under stress.
- APPLY COCONUT OIL. Grab yourself a bottle or organic, cold pressed coconut oil (it has so many benefits!) and apply a small amount to your ends. It will pack your strands with the oil that it's lacking.
- STOP OVER-WASHING. You should let at least one day in between washes. Washing your hair every day strips the natural oil from your scalp causing damage and breakage.
- AVOID ALCOHOL BASED PRODUCTS. Alcohol will only dry your strands which in turn will cause them to break. Get rid of any alcohol-based styling products and instead, keep it all natural. Stock up on coconut oil and baby powder to keep your tresses healthy and strong.
- EAT HEALTHY AND EXERCISE. A bad diet and no exercise can do a lot of damage to not only your hair, but your skin and nails as well. Eat a well balanced diet coupled with exercise can make a world of difference.
Fixing damaged/breaking hair will not happen overnight. Try to stick to the above rules for as long as you can and slowly, you will notice a difference. If all else fails, consult a professional stylist.
