Coconut oil, nature’s cure-all for skin, hair, nails, and beyond never ceases to amaze with its endless potential to heal and nurture the human body. And just when we think we are using coconut oil in all ways possible, there is still more. Which brings us to coconut oil pulling, a fancy way of introducing the act of swishing coconut oil around in your mouth for a period of time and spitting it out. But why do this and what are the benefits?
Oil pulling dates back centuries as a method used in traditional Indian Ayuverdic medicine for oral hygiene and internal health. The toothbrush as we know it today wasn’t a normal bathroom staple until the late 1930s, meaning there are quite a lot of years of humans doing something that worked to keep their mouths clean. Ayuverdic texts teach us that oil pulling was commonly used to cleanse and remove toxins from the mouth and salivary glands. The oil pulling procedure has been linked to curing 30 systemic diseases along with preventing cavities and other oral complications. As coconut oil is antibacterial and antimicrobial it can grab onto all the nasty things in the mouth and help “pull” them out.
Coconut Oil Pulling
The benefits of oil pulling include but are not limited to:
- Prevent cavities
- Prevent and heal tooth decay
- Remove excess plaque build-up
- Strengthen tooth enamel
- Whiten teeth
- Heal sore and bleeding gums
- Moisturize dry, cracked lips
- Lower microbial count (a.k.a kill bad breath)
- Soothe dry throat
- Strengthen the immune system
With a list like this its a wonder why we are not coconut oil pulling on a regular basis! And it’s so easy to do!
How To:
First, make sure to use cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil and always oil pull first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Start by putting 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth (you can always increase or decrease depending on your preference). Swish around for 5 to 10 minutes. It helps to find an activity to do to help the time pass. After swishing, spit in the trash and rinse. Brush and floss as normal for best results. Do this a minimum of 3 days a week to ensure a clean and happy mouth 🙂
