What Causes Thinning Hair?

There are a number of things that can cause someone to lose their hair or for their hair to thin out. These are:

  • genetics
  • aging
  • illness
  • commercial hair products
  • heat styling tools
  • allergies or reactions to chemical substances
  • poor nutrition

These factors can all contribute to hair loss or thinning hair, but the underlying condition should never be ignored. If you think you have a condition that's resulting in hair loss, please contact your physician. Otherwise, you can use any or all of the home remedies for hair growth and thickness.

#1. Eggs

egg yolk mask

Eggs are packed full of protein which means that they can help strengthen otherwise weak, brittle hair. Use on a regular basis for several months for best results. To use eggs on hair, simply beat 1 or 2 eggs (depending on how much hair you have), and massage gently into the scalp, making sure to cover entire head. Cover the head with a shower cap or towel and leave on for 30 to 45 minutes. Wash out and follow up with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Repeat 2-3 times a week.

Additionally, you can also add eggs to countless hair growth masks. This one here is a favorite of ours:

You'll Need:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tbsp ginger juice
  • 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 1 tbsp castor oil

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together and apply to dry, unwashed hair. Make sure to saturate all the hair starting from the roots to the tips. Leave on for 30 minutes and cover with a shower cap. Once time is up, wash your hair with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.

How Often:

Use this mask for hair growth 2-3 times a week. You should start seeing hair growth after about a month of usage.

#2. Carrier Oils

coconut oil

Carrier oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and castor oil contain omega3 fatty acids which are essential for hair health, growth, and strength. Both olive oil and coconut oil can also help provide hydration to an otherwise dry, itchy scalp. To use oils for hair growth, simply heat the oil up for a few seconds in the microwave and massage into the scalp, making sure to cover entire head. Leave on for 30 to 45 minutes and rinse out with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Repeat 2-3 times a week for best results.

Here is one of our all time favorite and tested oil hair mask that not only helps to grow hair faster, but also thickens and targets hair problems such as dandruff and itchy scalp.

You'll Need:

  • castor oil (organic, cold pressed is preferred)
  • few drops of essential oil (optional)

Directions:

Warm up the castor oil for a few seconds in the microwave. If using, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil such as tea tree oil or lavender oil. Pour the warm oil onto the scalp (making sure it's not too hot first so you don't burn your scalp!), and massage. Make sure you saturate entire head and leave on for 30 minutes and up to 1 hour for best results. Wash the oil out and follow up with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.

How Often:

Use this hot oil hair mask 3-4 times a week, or every time before you wash your hair. You should start to see results in as little as a month.

#3. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been used for thousands of years to treat a number of different scalp conditions including dry, itchy scalp, dandruff, and thinning hair. Aloe has natural healing properties, but can also strengthen and thicken the hair as long as it's used on a regular basis. For a quick aloe vera hair mask, use 100% pure aloe vera gel (either directly from the plant or from a bottle). Massage into the scalp and leave on for 30 to 45 minutes. Once time is up, rinse the aloe out, and follow up with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Use 2-3 times a week for best results.
