DIY Nail Soak Recipe
You'll Need:
- 1/4 cup orange juice (preferably freshly squeezed) or lemon juice
- 1 clove chopped garlic
- 1/4 cup olive oil (can be substituted for coconut oil or jojoba oil)
- essential oil of your choice – optional
Directions:
- In a bowl, mix orange juice with the garlic and soak your nails for about 15 minutes.
- Then, rinse your hands with warm water and soak them for 15 minutes in olive oil.
- Do this 2-3 times a week, and within 2 weeks you'll already notice a difference.
- Your nails should be much stronger and they'll also start to grow!
Why This Works:
Orange juice is full of antioxidants and vitamins which promote nail growth. Orange juice, since it is acidic, also helps to exfoliate the nail beds and soften cuticles.
Garlic is high in selenium. If your body lacks selenium, you'll know as you'll have weak, brittle nails. Garlic also has tons of antibacterial and anti fungal properties which is beneficial for nail growth.
Olive oil is an amazing moisturizer, able to penetrate deeply into skin. Because of this, it also helps to soften the cuticles and adds strength to the nail to prevent breakage.
The combination of all of these ingredients will strengthen nails and promote quick growth.
Upkeep
It's important to care for your nails on a regular basis, not only to strengthen nails, but also keep them healthy. Here are some things you can do on a regular basis to prevent breakage and keep cuticles and nails in tip top shape:
- Use a cuticle oil every night before bed. Have some cuticle oil by your nightstand. It will help soften them and encourage quicker nail growth.
- Moisturize your hands several times a day. Pick up a thick hand lotion and try to moisturize every time after washing your hands.
- Wear gloves when washing the dishes. Dish liquid can be very abrasiveness to the hands and nails, so don some gloves next time you do the dishes!
- Give your nails a break. While it's great having your nails done, it's also important to let your nails breathe once in a while. Skip the polish at least once a month for a week!

Can you use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. I really hate the smell but I so want to try this on my nails!!
Hi Linda,
I’ve never tried garlic powder instead of fresh garlic, so I really can’t tell you if that would work or not. I do recommend fresh garlic though – you could always cover your nose with a scarf 🙂
Thank you for the reply. I did buy fresh garlic at first but even in a blender I couldn’t get it smooth enough to use.
Sorry probably needed longer. Cause if the smell I dumped it pretty fast I’m afraid ?
New Years resolution – I will try again I promise lol.
Happy New Year everyone xxxx
Hi Lynn,
Happy New Year!!! You could even purchase garlic paste, which would make things a lot easier! Didn’t even think about that before! But garlic in general is SO good for the nails, and works wonders!
Do you know if the garlic or garlic paste is good for hair growth?
Hi Milissa,
Sure, you can absolutely use fresh garlic to encourage hair growth and inhibit bacteria. Garlic has been scientifically proven to kill bacateria that may form on the scalp, and in turn encourage hair growth. Mash up some garlic cloves and add them to a pan of slightly warm oil. Cook only until fragrant and remove from heat. Strain the liquid and allow to cool before massaging into the scalp. You can do this several times a week as a hair mask, and it’s got some pretty great benefits!
Amazing recommend ?
You can use hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup with 1/4 cup water. Soak 10-15 min. Then rinse with soap and water. Lastly dab grapeseed or any oil on cuticles and nail. Massage in and leave oil on skin. Push cuticles back if need. Add a dab of lotion or Vaseline for intense hydration.
