Making your own lip balm is actually one of the easiest DIYs you could do, not to mention it'll come at a fraction of the cost a store bought balm would cost you! So why not get crafty and start making your own? You can choose your scents and flavors, and it's actually a super cool activity to do with your friends or even your kids! We love this homemade lip balm recipe because it's sort of a dupe of Burt's Bees lip balm, but with none of the cost!
Benefits:
The benefits of making your own lip balm are plenty! Not only are you saving money, but you're also adding ingredients you know. More often than not, commercial lip balms are filled with ingredients that are bad for you. These ingredients include, but are not limited to, irritating dyes and perfumes, parabens, lanolin, BHA, and other chemicals that actually end up in your body.
Because lip balms go directly onto your lips, we think it's important that you know the ingredients. Most commercial lip balms contain lanolin, which is a substance made from sheep's hair and skin. Additionally, they also contain BHA preservatives, which have been proven to be carcinogenic.
Obviously making your own lip balm IS the better choice in every aspect. The ingredients in this recipe are not only all natural, but they are actually good for your lips!
Shea butter is extremely hydrating and moisturizing, so this recipe is great even for those with super dry lips.
Coconut oil also helps to seal in moisture and helps to keep lips looking young and plump.
Essential oils are all natural oils you can add to this recipe to give them a beautiful scent and help with healing.

The ingredients in this homemade lip balm recipe are all 100% natural, and, once you have these on hand, you'll be able to make hundreds of different variations!
You'll Need:
- 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles
- 2 tbsp shea butter
- 30+ drops peppermint essential oil or any other type of essential oil of your choice
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- dropper
- lip balm containers or small pots
Directions:
- In a double boiler, melt the beeswax pastilles, shea butter, and coconut oil until all melted and combined together.
- Remove pan from heat, but leave the mixture over the water to keep the mixture melted.
- Start by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil and then smelling the mixture to make sure the scent is to your liking. If you like the scent, add 30-40 drops and stir well.
- Use a dropper to fill the lip balm tubes or pour the mixture into small pots.
- Do this quickly as the mixture will harden in no time!
- Leave the balm at room temperature for a few hours until they're completely hardened.
- Use as you would any lip balm!
Notes:
If you'd like a harder, longer lasting lip balm, add a tsp or two of beeswax, and if you'd like a softer lip balm, use a little less.

You don’t indicate how many this will make…..or where to purchase beeswax pastilles or shea butter for the best prices….
Hi Paula,
It all depends on the size of the pot you use, but this recipe will make about 2-3 tbsp worth of lip balm, or 2 small lip balm containers. You can purchase beeswax and/or shea butter at your local health store or on Amazon 🙂
Hi aniela,
What is the expiry date of this lip balm?
It should last for quite a bit of time, I’d say a year or so, so long as you keep it out of extreme heat and sun 🙂
What did you add in order to make it colorful?
If you want, you can add a couple of drops of comsetic grade color or pigments. In this case though, we added a few drops of beet juice, which is all natural!
This is a really easy recipe to follow! I added vanilla and a few drops of beet juice to make it more colorful and give a bit of a lip tint 🙂
Glad you liked it Rita 🙂
