Coconut Oil and Baking Soda Face Mask Recipe
The combination coconut oil and baking soda are a match made in heaven and you'll see why!
Benefits of Coconut Oil for the Skin
Jump to RecipeCoconut oil is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiseptic ingredient. All of these properties will help heal acne scars and prevent bacteria from forming, therefore preventing the formation of acne and breakouts.
Because coconut oil is also loaded with antioxidants, it is the perfect candidate for those with aging skin as it protects the skin from the damage of free radicals and premature aging. Coconut oil is also packed full of fatty acids which is needed to prevent skin sagging and also to replace collagen loss.
Benefits of Baking Soda for the Skin
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a natural exfoliant as well as a natural bleaching agent which reduces the appearance of scars, prevents acne from forming, and sloughs off dead skin cells. This will brighten dull skin and give it a beautiful glow, and will also control the over-production of sebum (oil) in the skin.
This mask is also good for those with aging skin. The properties in coconut oil are anti aging and can help with cell turnover. Because coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, it will help slow the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.
A natural skin cleanser, baking soda also helps to slow down the aging process, by removing dirt, impurities, and encouraging healthy cell regeneration.
This baking soda and coconut oil face mask can also be used as a face wash, and makes a great substitute for commercial skin cleansers which are often times laden with harsh chemicals.
Ingredients Needed:
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp extra virgin coconut oil (preferably organic coconut oil)
- Raw honey – optional (great for acne prone skin and oily skin)
- Lemon juice – optional (great for acne scars and dark spots)
Directions:
- In a small bowl, mix the baking soda with the coconut oil until well combined.
- If you're using raw honey or lemon juice, add those in now. Be careful with the ratios – you want your mask to be easily applied onto the skin. So if it's too thick, add more coconut oil, and if it's too thin, add more baking soda.
- Apply the mixture to cleansed skin and rub in slow, circular motions to remove any dirt, buildup, and dead skin cells.
- Leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes (5 minutes for sensitive skin, and 10 minutes for oily skin). You can leave the mask on up to 15 minutes.
- Remove the mask with warm water or a warm washcloth.
- Rinse off any leftover residue using cold water to close up the pores.
- Use 2-3 times a week to reverse the signs of aging, brighten skin, prevent acne, and reduce the appearance of scars and dark spots.
- After using the mask, help close up pores by using a green tea toner. Brew some organic green tea and let cool in the refrigerator for about an hour. Use a cotton round to apply the green tea to your skin.
NOTES:
- Like with any homemade beauty recipe, please test a small patch on your hand or arm before applying the face.
- For those with sensitive skin, only leave the mask on for 5 minutes and use no more than once a week.
- For those with acne prone and oily skin, add a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice to help remove acne scars and dark spots.
- You can also add a drop or two of your favorite essential oils such as tea tree oil (for oily/acne prone skin), or lavender oil for sensitive skin.
DISCLAIMER:
Please be aware that coconut oil has a high comedogenic rating, which means it can clog pores. If you have sensitive, oily, and/or acne prone skin, monitor usage and test a small patch of skin before. If you see increased oil production and/or breakouts, discontinue use. Although coconut oil can have great benefits for the skin, it can also cause acne for some.
Baking soda can also be irritating for those with sensitive and dry skin. Test a small patch of skin before applying, and if you see any adverse effects, please stop using.

Is it good for dry skin
Hi Kareena,
If you have dry skin, you should only use this mask twice a month, and be sure to moisturize afterwards as baking soda can be drying!
Hey Aniela can I use ginger oil as an alternative for green tea
If you’d like to swap out the tea tree oil for the ginger oil, yes you can certainly do so! I’m not too familiar with the ginger oil, but I have heard it can cure a multitude of skin ailments!
Can I make a batch of this to use over a period of time or do I have to mix it before each use?
Hi Tania!
You should be able to make a batch and store it as long as you keep any water out of it! Once water gets in, it can get contaminated and therefore go bad. Also, you’ll have to make sure that the coconut oil stays liquid, so keep it in a warm place.
can this mask fair my skin tone
Hi Kamal,
By this, are you referring to skin lightening? If so, it may help to do that since baking soda is a natural lightening agent!
I have oily skin and I wish to try.
Can you recommend a specific brand coconut oil?
Anything that’s 100% organic and cold pressed will do! Just be sure to look at the ingredients list – it should only state 1 ingredient and that should be cold pressed coconut oil. I use Viva Naturals Coconut Oil which you can find on Amazon 🙂
Will the above face mask really work? Is baking soda good in the skin? Did anybody tried the above mask?
Yes it really does work, especially for those with oily and/or acne prone skin is baking soda is a natural exfoliant. Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory and also great for aging skin since it’s packed full of fatty acids!
What is the best way to cleanse before applying mask?
Just your regular cleansing routine will do 🙂
After wash my face i get very oily face?? Is this mask work like that?? After washing this mask is necessary to wash again face with facewash??
Hi Aysh,
No, there is no need to wash your face again after using baking soda and coconut oil. The coconut oil helps to remove dirt and makeup, while the baking soda gently scrubs off dead skin cells, so your skin should be nice and clean 🙂
Is it okey to use fresh coconut oil?
Not quite sure what you mean by “fresh”coconut oil, but you should just 100% extra virgin, raw, cold pressed coconut oil 🙂
What is best for saggy skin around the lips, laugh lines and jaws around the chin area
Can I use on dry and saggy skin ? Does it work?
Hi Pam,
This recipe is for acne scars, so I wouldn’t really recommend it for sagging skin or dry skin. Check out this recipe that works amazingly for aging skin, fine lines, sagging, and wrinkles!
Hello
Can I use pure coconut oil
Hi there,
You should use 100% organic, cold pressed coconut oil, which you can find online, or any healthy, drug store, or grocery store 🙂
Did you find the mixture was really runny because of the coconut oil? I found I needed to add more bi-carb, is that ok? I thought it might be too runny to use as a mask. What do you suggest?
Hi Emily,
You can absolutely adjust the recipe to your preference, that’s not a problem. If it’s too runny, simply add a little bit more baking soda, and if it’s too thick, add a little bit more coconut oil 🙂
Thanks for sharing! Great recipe, but like you said, be careful with coconut oil as it CAN clog pores!
how often can i use this?
Hi Petra,
I would use this once or twice a week for best results. If you have sensitive skin, only use once a week.
Leaves my skin very soft and silky 🙂 TY
So glad you like it mermaid_time 🙂
is coconut oil good for your skin?
Hi there,
Although coconut oil IS good for your skin, recent studies have found that using it too often can lead to clogged pores, especially if you have oily/acne prone skin. Test on a small patch of skin to see how your skin reacts to coconut oil before using it on a regular basis.
you really shouldn’t be using coconut oil on ur skin because it will clog ur pores and ull end up breaking out!
Hi there!
Yes, you are correct and we have put in a disclaimer claiming that. Some people don’t have any problems using coconut oil on their skin, but those with oily and acne prone skin should definitely be careful.
I have very dry skin, so for me, coconut oil works wonders, but I do know that for some people it definitely clogs pores. So you just need to know your skin type!
Love this recipe! It’s so simple, but leaves your skin glowing after just one use! A word of warning though, if you have super sensitive skin, I wouldn’t use this because it could be a little abrasive, but for those with oily skin, it’s great!
Can you put this on your neck? How about lichen sclerosis scars? (idk if i spelled that right)
OMG this stuff cleans your face sooooooo well!
