3 Simple Steps to Shiny Hair

By Aniela / October 9, 2009

We all want full,  beautiful, youthful looking hair, and that means we just want lots of shine. Why? Because shiny hair simply passes off as healthy hair! Did you know that the smoother the hair cuticle, the more shine it reflects? When a hair cuticle is damaged, light gets absorbed into cracks and crevices, making hair look dull. Therefore, you need to fill in those cracks and use the right techniques to smooth the cuticle. So here are 3 simple steps to help you get the most shine out of your hair!

For Straight Hair

How to Get Shiny Hair for Straight Hair

Step 1: Cleansing

Before you get that shine, you need to cleanse your hair of all the built-up gunk from hair products that's accumulated over time. For this, use a deep-cleansing shampoo once a week. Start by applying conditioner first from your ears all the way down to your ends to provide a protective barrier on the strands that helps prevent tears and split ends from forming. Continue by applying the deep-cleansing shampoo only to your roots, lather, and try rinsing with cold water to help seal and smooth the cuticle.

Step 2: Prep

Apply an anti-frizz serum or polishing milk to towel-dried hair. Make sure you run it through the hair using a fine tooth comb – this will ensure that those cracks and crevices get filled with moisture instead of being blow away when you start to blowdry. Finish off with a volumizing spray for a little pick-me-up.

Step 3: Finish and Style

Use a blow-dryer with a nozzle attached and point the airflow only downwards to help ensure smooth cuticles as you dry. Finish drying your hair with cold air from your blow-dryer and apply a shine spray or frizz serum to ends for ultimate shine.

For Curly Hair

Step 1: Hydrate

Start by using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, as curly hair tends to get a lot dryer than straight hair. For best shine results on curly hair, try washing every other day so you don't strip the hair of its natural oils.

Step 2: Prep

Apply a frizz-ease serum or a shine curl-enhancing spray/cream to wet strands. Comb the cream throughout the entire hair using a wide-tooth comb because that will make the cuticle lie a little flatter.

Step 3: Finish and Style:

Twist inch-size pieces around your finger, then scrunch the spirals up, shaping individual curls to make them more uniform. Finish off by blow-drying your hair with a diffuser or letting it air-dry to reduce heat damage.
