Get a Messy Bun

Sexy, messy buns are extremely hot right now, and so easy to pull off. Perfect for bad hair days, lazy days, and pretty much any day you want! They look great during the day, at night, at work, school, whatever you want! Here’s how to pull off a messy bun.

Start off by sweeping the front part of your hair to one side as to create a fuller crown area. Use your fingers along with a paddle brush to direct both sides to the back of the head.

Gather your hair into a loose pony and secure with an ouchless elastic (sides and back). The base of the pony should rest in the middle of the back of the head. Push your pony up slightly to create fullness at the top of your head. Add some hairspray.

Separate the pony into one inch sections, curling each section loosely. You don’t have to do this very carefully, as it is a messy bun, and you just want to get some waves. Holding the curler for about 3 seconds should be enough, depending on the hair thickness.

After each section is curled, use a bobby pin to secure the curl loosely against your scalp. When pinning the curls, make sure that you pin some at the top as to form an even and balanced shape.

Once you’ve finished pinning the curls, use your fingers to gently loosen up the curls, making it look messy. Finish off with a little bit of hair spray and you have a sexy, messy bun! messy bun

i get it but how do you do one with out curling your hair? like if you only had two minutes to do it?

  4. ka April 20, 2008 at 5:29 pm ·

wtf! that is too much effort for a MESSY bun! they’re supposed to be simple!

  5. Aniela April 22, 2008 at 1:01 pm ·

It is very simple, trust me. You don’t necessarily have to curl your hair. Just put some mousse onto wet hair, shake it up a bit, and put it up in a bun. As long as you get a little volume and waves, it’s pretty easy!

My hair is dead straight and practically impossible to curl. But Remington curl it is really good for natural looking curls because it has ceramic tongs. but i dont curl it just to put it in a bun!!

  17. beth xx November 19, 2009 at 4:07 pm ·

Ihave wavy to curly hair but me and my sister always wear messy buns cos they are simple and look lovely. She has pin straight hair but neither of us curl it. this is a quick simple look. All you need to do is tie it in a pony tail then seperate the hair pinning pits up and putting more bobbles round until you get an attractive shape :)

This messy bun is the cutest, i have wavy hair already so putting mouse in my hair and pinning with bobby pins should be real simple, i loves the looks of messy buns and they never would really work out for me but im going to try this, you ladies gave out some good pointers, kthanks<3

  22. Ayesha January 19, 2010 at 3:06 pm ·

I have a really easy way to do it and i have pin straight hair :)

I just flip my head so my hair is all messed up (DO NOT BRUSH/COMB! use your fingers!)
Next, i gather all the hair to the top of my head then get a ouchless elastic band and tie it up into a full pony then put it through the band again so its in a half pony :D So it looks like a bun.
Thirdly, Mess it up a little (The bun part) add hairspray (natural hold) all over head. Get a cute hairband and place it so your bangs or fringe is seperated from the rest of your hair/bun.

Seriously, i do it in like 10 minutes tops in the mornings to go to school and it gives that messy yet sculptered look… i love it!!

    Love, Ayesha x

Ouchless is a hairband without a little metal piece that gets caught in your hair.

  33. Ashli May 1, 2010 at 5:25 pm ·

Hey i have some cool tips for anyone that has straight hair.. When you pull your hair into a pony tail (for your messy bun) pull up on some of your hair (on the top of your head) to get some volume and then spray with some freeze and hold hair spray usually you will have to put two bobby pins in the side to hold the hair from falling (it should stay for the whole day) then pull your ponytail into another holder and twist around a couple of times put bobby pins any where that you need too then if you want your bangs down in your face take about four inches and straightnen them then spray all over with a volumizing spray make sure before you do any of this your hair is clean and blow dried and straight or it wont go up right

  34. ALEXIS May 2, 2010 at 12:26 am ·

  37. Miley May 26, 2010 at 5:28 pm ·

this is soo cool. i really need a hair cut so i am going to get it done so i can do the messy bun because my hair is all the way down to my ass

  38. Dyane May 30, 2010 at 2:28 pm ·

I guess this would work and look wicked cute. But if I’m having a bad hair day, im usually also running late and stressed out. I dont want to spend the time to curl and everything. So heres what I do. Flip your head and grab some volumizing mousse. Just use your fingers and scrunch your hair as you go. You’ll get volume and waves, then all you need to do is use a hairband and pull your hair back. Then mess it up a bit. This will work for straight hair or if your like me and you have wavy-ish straight-ish hair. For really wavy or curly you probably don’t even need mousse. :] It will look really cute and your hair will look thick and bouncy :D

  39. Jessica June 7, 2010 at 7:43 pm ·

What I do is brush my hair back next flip it to the front while you’re looking at the ground up side down then I brush it down then grab it in poney tail clutch while making it smooth with rubbing your hair up with your hands on each side of your head make sure it’s high so it does not hang low then look up a bit and make a half pony or bun if you know how if not look it up or just make a half pony and pull it half but not all the way and bam or if you don’t want a bun the just pull it out all the way and
make the pony tail flip to the side for a side pony or just a normal pony

  40. Mrs.Long June 7, 2010 at 7:47 pm ·

Jessica that is very helpful. I’d love to do that soon! More helpful than this crap.

  41. Kelsie June 15, 2010 at 5:21 pm ·

A messy bun is going to take more work if you don’t have the right hair texture. It’s supposed to be quick and effortless so I’d skip the curling iron and skip the style all together if you don’t have naturally wavy hair or can’t create it with ease. For straight or thin hair, go for a slicked back high pony tail, quick, easy, and cute. Don’t fight your natural hair texture especially when pressed for time.

  42. Someone June 19, 2010 at 5:48 pm ·

These tips are a lump of good tips

  43. Lauren June 20, 2010 at 12:15 am ·

My hair is kind of thick and it’s somewhere in between straight and slightly wavy. What I’ve found that turns out the best is putting my hair in a messy bun right after towel drying my hair after I wash it. I just throw it up in usually just one elastic band and maybe a couple bobby pins and it’s good to go for the day. For some reason for me it looks best when my hair starts out wet without any curling or anything, it’s just messy, that’s it. Anyway I hope I’ve helped some of you who are confused :] haha

  44. Bellllllllllls June 21, 2010 at 9:15 am ·

I still don’t get it…I usually put my hair up in a ponytail and put half of the ponytail into the same hairtie “ring” or whatever its called :)

  48. Mrs. Dr. Venture July 4, 2010 at 6:19 pm ·

That’s a lot of effort for a messy bun. Seriously? Curling irons? Bobby pins? It’s just a half effort pony tail. Don’t pull it all the way through and leave a little slack so it sags a bit. I love the look, how easy it is and it hides I don’t put much effort into elaborate hairdos every morning.

  49. Aniela July 5, 2010 at 8:06 pm ·

Well it may be a little bit of an effort, but for those with thin, pin straight hair it can be really hard to pull off a messy bun so this is for them :)

  50. naomi July 8, 2010 at 6:24 am ·

try putting yourhair in two french plaits after a bath, then the next morning take them out and backcomb your hair a little to give it some volume then put it up in a little bun without brushing it

Buns are cool! I’m going to get one after reading this blog. I’m always trying to keep up with hair trends and I think this is a trendy hair style to have. I think it’s important to have the right hair product and correct hair care products. I did damage my hair using inferior products and changing my hair all the time. I have learnt from my mistakes and now always use the best hair treatments.

What products does everyone use? I’m using Herbal Essences at the moment and it’s really great:
    http://www.herbalessences.com.au

What’s the optimum length for the messy bun? Does it work better the longer the hair you have?

    Thanks.

  71. Shaista July 30, 2011 at 8:58 am ·

    Jennifer,
to be fair, my hair doesnt curl either! haha, so all i do is like Tiffany, just grab it in one bunch, stick a load of bobby pins in it, & BAM – sorted :D

  72. Kayla September 4, 2011 at 11:07 pm ·

This is way too much effort for a messy bun. Messy buns should take no more than five minutes, and no heat, and most definetly not 1,000 bobby pins. Here is my method: (I have super wavy, thick, poufy hair)
Gather your hair in a low or high pony tail
On the third (or last) time your wrapping the hair tie around, kind of stop halfway through, so you have a bun shape. Bobby pin it in place, if thats necessary.
This really works best for thicker and more wavy/curly hair.

  73. anomonous September 6, 2011 at 3:28 pm ·

that was no help at all!!!!

  74. Bella October 27, 2011 at 9:50 am ·

I have straight, medium-thickness hair, and what I do is put my hair into a high, scraped-back ponytail, then push all my hair up against the bobble and secure it with a bobble.
    Hope this helped x
