By Aniela / December 17, 2018

Every woman wants long, healthy, and strong nails. However, that's easier said than done! Everyday mundane tasks, such as washing dishes and cleaning, can weaken the nail enamel and make it hard for our nails to grow strong.

For this reason, we've gathered 8 essential ways to strengthen nails and avoid nail damage. These are all quick and simple things we can do every day to get stronger, longer nails!

8 Ways to Strengthen Nails at Home

#1. Limit Water Exposure

Too much exposure to water can weaken the nail enamel and inhibit growth. When washing dishes, try to wear gloves. The more you keep your nails away from water, the stronger and healthier they'll get.

#2. Drink More Water

While you should limit water exposure, you should definitely NOT limit water drinking! In fact, staying hydrated can make a huge difference for not only your nails, but your skin, hair, and overall health as well. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, and limit your sugar intake.

#3. Keep Weak Nails Short

If you have weak, brittle nails, it's best to keep them short until they regain some of their strength. Be sure to keep them nice and trimmed, and use an emery board to file your nails every other day.

#4. Use a Cuticle Oil

For long and strong nails, apply a cuticle oil every night before bed. This will prevent hangnails, weak nails, and also moisture dry nails and skin. Massage gently into the cuticle and leave on overnight. Check out this homemade cuticle oil recipe.

#5. DIY Olive Oil Nail Soak

Giving your nails some much needed TLC can go a long way! Once a week, soak your nails in olive oil for about 10 minutes. Sit back, relax, and let the oil penetrate deeply into the nails and cuticles. Olive oil is super moisturizing and will strengthen and hydrate the nails. Alternatively, you can also use coconut oil, castor oil, avocado oil, or vitamin E oil for a soak.

#6. Don't Use Hand Sanitizers

Hand sanitizers are loaded with alcohol which actually dry out the skin. Try to limit your exposure to them as much as possible. If you work in the medical field and you must use them, be sure to follow up with a thick, homemade hand cream

#7. Limit Exposure to Cleaning Products

Regularly exposing your skin to cleaning products can wreak havoc on your skin and nails. These products are laden with harsh chemicals and alcohols, so be sure to wear gloves every time you clean!

#8. Your Nails Are Not Tools

While it may be tempting to use your nails to scratch off a sticker or open up a can, this can be very damaging to your nails. Have a small multi-tool on your key-chain to avoid using your nails!

Follow these 8 ways to strengthen nails at home, and in no time your nails should be stronger, healthier, and so much longer!
